AI Sector Reports: Measured Citation Benchmarks by Industry
Published August 2026 · 10 min read

AEOForged Sector Intelligence Reports are AI sector reports — purchasable, measured maps of which brands ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini cite in one industry. One sweep serves many buyers. You get a shared sector leaderboard with Wilson 95% confidence intervals, query battlegrounds, the off-site source economy, and a private “where you stand” addendum. Measured, not promised. No citation guarantees.
If you searched for an AI citation benchmark, a competitive AI visibility report, or industry citation rates across answer engines, that is the artifact — not a ChatGPT screenshot and not a dashboard that only watches your own prompts.
What is an AI sector report?
An AI sector report (also called a sector intelligence report or sector citation benchmark) freezes a buyer-question panel for one category, names the brand roster, runs real answer-engine checks, and publishes standing with uncertainty. Misses stay in the data. Thin samples refuse to ship as fake rankings.
It answers a different question than your own AI search visibility board:
| Your citation board | AI sector report | |
|---|---|---|
| Population | Your tracked prompts | Named brands in one sector |
| Unit | Page / domain / brand tier for you | Roster citation rates + battlegrounds |
| Output | Month-to-month movement on your questions | Shared leaderboard + private addendum |
| Honesty trap | Calling a brand mention a page citation | Publishing ranks without CIs or misses |
We keep those instruments separate on purpose. Our first-party dogfood is live AI citation rates for aeoforged.com. For the methodology of multi-brand panels, see competitive AI citation benchmark for my sector.
What AEOForged Sector Intelligence Reports include
On the Sector Intelligence storefront, every edition is built to be citable as research, not sales theatre:
- Citation leaderboard — brands with Wilson 95% confidence intervals (overlapping bars are not a win).
- Query battlegrounds — which category questions each brand wins, including uncontested ground.
- Source economy — Reddit, YouTube, review sites, and editorial domains engines actually cite (not a backlink fantasy).
- Invisible brands — roster members with measured absence, not dropped rows.
- Engine contrast — ChatGPT vs Perplexity vs Gemini behaviour on the same panel (storefront editions name engines covered; Google AI Overviews is not currently covered).
- Private position addendum — buyer-only “where you stand” vs the shared map.
- Test-retest variance — same-day repeats so flip rates sit next to the headline.
Depth floors are binding in product code: a thin sample should not publish as a sector ranking. Pre-order sectors run a fresh sweep (same price, methodology published). Checkout for the one-time snapshot is listed on /intel; Dominate includes a sector edition inside the ongoing programme when payments are live.
Why industry AI citation rates differ by engine
AI search visibility is not one number. Engines do not share one citation set.
Attrifast's 1,200-prompt 2026 vertical study reports median unique domains cited per answer of roughly 6.4 on Perplexity, 3.6 on Claude, 3.1 on ChatGPT, and 2.4 on Gemini — with SaaS showing denser Perplexity citation (about 7.4 domains per answer in that study) than healthcare. Treat vendor panels as directional until you re-measure on your own frozen questions: sample construction and citation definitions are rarely fully auditable in blog write-ups.
Topify's industry citation-benchmark piece makes the practical point: raw mention counts are meaningless without sector context. Fifteen citations can be strong in one vertical and weak in another.
Engine overlap is thin. Large multi-engine citation corpora summarised in 2026 industry write-ups (including Distribution.studio's AI CMO Benchmark and related B2B citation reporting) put co-citation of the same domains across ChatGPT and Perplexity on the order of roughly one in ten. Treat that band as directional — definitions differ by vendor — but the planning implication is stable: an honest ChatGPT citation benchmark and a Perplexity visibility read can disagree without either being “wrong.”
Our own multi-engine dogfood synthesis — what sources AI engines actually cite — recorded 3,563 citations across 96 questions: 89.5% pointed to editorial content, with YouTube and LinkedIn appearing in the top five in every sweep. That is first-party measurement with published methodology, not a borrowed leaderboard.
AI search share of voice vs a frozen sector sweep
Share of voice in AI answers (and related “share of citation” dashboards) usually tracks prompts over time for brands you care about. Useful for monitoring. Different job from an AI sector report:
- Tracker / SOV layer — continuous or recurring checks on a prompt set; great for “did we move this month?”
- Sector report — frozen multi-brand sweep; great for “who owns this category panel, with what uncertainty?”
Visibility products such as Profound, Peec.ai, and Otterly sit in the monitoring layer. They do not replace a published sector methodology with depth floors and a buyer-private addendum. Roundups that compare generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) tools still owe the same honesty bar: name engines, keep misses, split branded vs generic, and show confidence intervals when you publish ranks.
Yext's overview of how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude decide what to cite is a useful primer on citation behaviour — still not a substitute for your sector's measured panel.
How to read a competitive AI visibility report
When you open any competitive AI visibility report (ours or a vendor blog):
- Panel first. Which questions? Frozen when? Best-of / comparison / informational mix?
- Roster. Who counts as in-sector? Are directories and social hosts mislabelled as “competitors”?
- Tier. Page citation ≠ brand mention ≠ absent.
- Branded vs generic. A prompt that contains a brand name is plumbing for that brand, not category authority. Never blend those rates in one client-facing SOV sentence.
- CIs and misses. Overlapping Wilson intervals mean no detectable separation. “Not cited” rows are data.
- Engine labels. Do not plan a Perplexity-heavy content bet from ChatGPT-only evidence.
- Referral ≠ citation. Traffic-share figures for AI referrals (and conversion anecdotes in vendor blogs) are a different instrument from citation standing on a sector panel — do not blend them into one “visibility score.”

Snapshot vs ongoing programme
Two commercial shapes, one measurement spine:
- Sector snapshot — one-time AI sector report for a named industry (list price on /intel; self-serve when checkout is open). Yours to keep. Private addendum included.
- Dominate — ongoing programme that includes a sector intelligence edition for your market, plus the citation board, monthly Citation Strategy Report, and publish→social cycles (your agent writes; we research, score, package, and measure). See packages and the measurement-first alternative to SEO retainers.
A snapshot diagnoses standing. Dominate is for teams who need next month’s motion on the same category questions — not a second copy of the PDF.
